Canadian Isabelle Weidemann added a second medal to her collection from the Beijing Olympics.

This time, the 26-year-old skater won a silver medal in the 5000m in long track speed skating.

Starting in the penultimate group, Weidemann had to beat her rival, the Norwegian Ragne Wiklund and the time of the Czech Martina Sablikova of 6 min 50 seconds and 9 hundredths. She did better than Sablikova with a time of 6 min 48 seconds and 18 hundredths to temporarily take first place and thus secure another medal.

However, the formidable Dutch Irene Schouten was in the last wave and the latter left no doubt about the outcome of the competition. Schouten flew over the 5000m to win the gold medal with an Olympic record thanks to a time of 6 min 43 seconds and 51 hundredths.

Weidemann was relegated to the second step of the podium and Sablikova finished in third position.

The 26-year-old Canadian had won the bronze medal in the 3000m at the start of the Olympics. It was her second participation in the 5000m at the Olympics, having finished sixth in PyeongChang in 2018.

Canadian Ivanie Blondin withdrew from the event to focus on team competitions including the pursuit.
