Canadian Mirela Rahvena got off to a flying start in the women’s skeleton event on Friday at the Beijing Olympics.
With a time of 1:02.03 in her first appearance on the track, Rahvena leads by two hundredths of a second over the Australian Jaclyn Naracott, and by 23 hundredths over the holder of the third place, the Chinese Dan Zhao.
Rahvena is notably ahead of the Dutch Kimberley Bos, the Austrian Janine Flock and the German Jacqueline Loelling, three podium hopes for their respective nations.
The skeleton competition features a total of four runs. The competitors will return to the track at the National Center for Sliding Sports at 10 p.m. Quebec time.
The last two runs will take place on Saturday only. A total of 25 athletes are taking part in the event.
