YANQING, China — Switzerland’s Lara Gut-Behrami finally claimed the Olympic super-G title that eluded her in Sochi and Pyeongchang when she set the fastest time of the Beijing Olympics on Friday.

Gut-Behrami, fourth in 2014 and 2018, cleared the Yanqing National Alpine Ski Center Rock Course in one minute, 13.51 seconds to climb to the top step of the podium.

She was 22 hundredths ahead of Austrian Mirjam Puchner (1:13.73). Her compatriot Michelle Gisin took bronze, completing the race in 1:13.81, 30 hundredths behind the winner.

“I had no strategy. It was my problem in the past, thinking too much about how to always do better. I love super-G, I thought that this track was not so different from the ones I’m used to. I’m trying to take advantage but I think it’s going to take me a few days to figure out what’s happening to me,” she said.

The day was more difficult for the Canadians. Quebecer Marie-Michèle Gagnon, sixth in the last Worlds, could not do herself justice. The Lac-Etchemin skier could not do better than 14th place, 1.14 seconds behind Gut-Behrami.

Roni Remme of Collingwood, Ont., finished 24th, 2.27 seconds off the standard time.

American Mikaela Shiffrin was able to find some redemption on the slopes this Friday. After being quickly excluded from the slalom and giant slalom, Shiffrin wanted to find pleasure on the slopes by competing in the event where she finished third in the last Worlds after being crowned in 2019.

The experience may not have been as conclusive as she would have liked – she said she was aiming for the podium in every race she entered before the Olympics – but Shiffrin still finished ninth. rank in 1:14.30, 79 hundredths of the pace set by Gut-Behrami.

The women will be back in action next Tuesday with the downhill. A training session is scheduled for Tuesday. The men will be back on the boards on Sunday, with the giant slalom.
