BEIJING, China — Canada’s Jennifer Jones lost 8-5 to Japan’s Satsuki Fujisawa on Friday at the Beijing Ice Cube.
Under pressure from the start against the 2018 Olympic bronze medalists, Jones was unable to pace herself in her second game of the rotational tournament at the Olympics.
This is the first time Jones has lost a match at the Olympics. She won her first here and had a perfect run to win a gold medal at the 2014 Sochi Games.
Canadian Brad Gushue takes on Swiss Peter de Cruz later Friday.
Fujisawa stole a run in three of the first five innings and scored two runs when she had the hammer in the third.
Canada got back on their feet when Fujisawa made his first error of the game in the sixth inning.
Jones took the opportunity to close the gap with two points but lost momentum in the seventh after an error by Kaitlyn Lawes gave the Japanese two points.
In the opening matches of the men’s tournament, Switzerland defeated Russian Olympic Committee representative Sergey Glukhov 6-3 and American John Shuster defeated Britain’s Bruce Mouat 9-7.
Sweden’s Niklas Edin defeated Italy’s Joel Retornaz 9-3 and China’s Xiuyue Ma edged Denmark’s Mikkel Krause 5-4.
Sweden (3-0) and Canada (2-0) are the only undefeated men’s teams entering the evening’s session.
