FIS has extended the ban for Russian athletes. This decision is suicide.
The timid hopes of our skiers to take part in the World Cup starting in a month, which were previously presented by the FIS Secretary General Michel Vion, were shattered this week by the statement of Thomas Bach.
Despite the obvious economic and sports losses that the International Ski Federation will suffer, the officials decided not to allow Alexander Bolshunov and company to participate in the new season.
For FIS, this decision is akin to suicide.
Everything was predetermined
The leadership of the world ski races did not support the intrigue around the decision on our athletes and sent a signal to the entire community in advance: Russia should not be allowed. Blame it all – the speech of the head of the IOC Thomas Bach.
At the general assembly of the Association of National Olympic Committees, which took place a few days before the meeting of the FIS Council, Bach called on sports federations to prevent Russian and Belarusian athletes from international competitions:
“Continue to follow the sanctions and adhere to protective measures,” Thomas said.
And although the Germans put the particularly violent Danes, who spoke out against Russia’s participation in the General Assembly, in their place, the general rhetoric untied the hands of all federations. Johan Eliash, FIS President, exhaled and with a calm soul, even before the official meeting with the board members, reported:
We have decided to follow the recommendations of the IOC. Therefore, our position is such that Russians and Belarusians will not participate in our competitions.
The Scandinavian countries willingly picked up the wave of anti-Russian statements and supported Eliash:
“Nothing has changed, and I don’t see any signs that it will. Russian athletes will not participate in FIS competitions next season. We have a single point of view on this issue,” said FIS Council member Martti Uusitalo from Finland.
After the words of the top management of world skiing, only the most desperate optimist could hope for the removal of the ban from Russian skiers.
Catastrophic decision
October 22 in the Austrian Selden at the opening of the winter season, 22 representatives of the FIS Council had to decide on the fate of Russia. But the sports festival did not work out: it rained all night, and in the morning sleet began to fall, which turned the track into a mess. As a result, the organizers canceled the competition.
However, the blurred start of the season did not prevent the officials from getting together and stating the expected decision. The Swedish representative in the FIS Council, Mats Aries, confirmed the extension of the Russian ban:
– It worked out as expected. Same solution as before,” he says.
We have to admit that this decision not only upset us, but put the world ski races on the brink of the abyss. Despite the political statements of the Scandinavians, all functionaries are well aware that without Russia, the Cup and the World Cup are doomed.
The number of spectators of international ski starts consists of a quarter of the Russian audience. At the same time, the rating of broadcasts has been falling for the last five years. Now hardly anyone will watch the 2022/23 season in Russia, and not a single domestic media company has acquired the rights to show the races.
Norwegian journalists have calculated that it is Russia and Norway that occupy 80% of all men’s podiums in recent seasons. Without us, only representatives of the “country of the Vikings” will show off there. Who is interested in watching this? Even the Norwegians themselves are unlikely, and there is nothing to say about other European countries. Fans will continue to ignore this boring spectacle.
Domestic starts and relations with China
Of course, not only Europeans should be upset. Our skiers have already lost in the commercial component due to the termination of contracts with foreign sponsors, and now the level of competition will noticeably decrease. It is obvious that in the upcoming season we will observe our team only at domestic competitions.
There is a chance to compete with China, but so far we are talking only about the junior team: cross-country skiing is included in the program of the III Russian-Chinese Winter Youth Games, which will be held from December 15 to 20 in the Chinese province of Jilin.
But we have to admit that for Russian skiers and fans, this alignment was expected. And, most importantly, neither Vyalba nor her team could change the situation in any way. But the FIS leadership deprived itself of a full season on its own, and this will definitely lead to disastrous consequences for cross-country skiing.

“Just the kind of person he is.” The biathlon star revealed the ugly side of Bolshunov

Kristina Reztsova spoke about the behavior of the three-time Olympic champion.
Alexander Bolshunov this season has become an even more media personality in Russian sports than before, although this attention is not always perceived in a positive way. Several scandals and even disqualifications are still widely discussed in the press.
And now Russian biathlon star Kristina Reztsova suddenly told interesting details about the behavior of the three-time Olympic champion.
The two universes did not intersect
Skiing and biathlon, although they are related sports, still do not always overlap. The competition calendar is structured in such a way that even if skiers and biathletes run on the same tracks, they do so at different times. So this weekend, some are performing in Izhevsk, and others in Tchaikovsky. But the Olympics are a different matter. There, in fact, Russia has one single team, which in theory should be as united as possible.
It’s a completely normal story when athletes from some disciplines come to cheer on their compatriots from others. Skaters can often be seen at hockey games and so on. So at the Beijing Olympics in 2022, skiers and biathletes actually ran across the road from each other, if you look from a geographical point of view. And, of course, they mostly supported their colleagues.
Alexander Bolshunov became a three-time Olympic champion in China and generally removed questions about who really is the best skier on the planet. This was recognized even in Norway. Kristina Reztsova was also good and brought relay silver and bronze from China. However, globally, the two universes then intersected little. Even taking into account the fact that the suspension happened, and our skiers and biathletes competed exclusively in their homeland.
“He doesn’t even say hello!”
The contact between Bolshunov and Reztsova in absentia occurred today. Kristina brilliantly won the pursuit race at the Commonwealth Cup stage in Tchaikovsky, almost a minute ahead of her closest competitors. On Match TV, the Russian woman not only talked about her triumph, but also told extremely interesting details of her conversation with Bolshunov. More precisely, the lack of this communication.
– He doesn’t even say hello! How will he give me the phone number? He doesn’t say hello to anyone at all. I don’t deserve it. So I went to one Olympics with him. After the Games we saw each other everywhere. He doesn’t greet anyone. “He’s just such a person in life,” Reztsova said on the air of the “Biathlon with Dmitry Guberniev” program.
The Match TV commentator himself also responded to Christina’s words, wishing our champion to treat people differently, despite all his titles and awards.
– I’m not surprised at all. I watched Zanin’s story about how none of the biathletes have Bolshunov’s phone number. We can say that from the point of view of Olympic titles, any biathlete is a dandy compared to Bolshunov, and maybe that’s true. But, on the other hand, there are also Olympic medalists and world champions. When Kristina Reztsova says that Bolshunov doesn’t greet anyone, this probably speaks once again about the person’s upbringing. I want to say to myself that Bolshunov always says hello to me and will probably continue to say hello. I respect Sasha as an athlete. I would like to wish him empathy, love of humanity and treat people a little differently,” Guberniev told Match TV.
Alexander, of course, had a very difficult start to the season. Scandals and not the best results obviously do not add confidence and can unnerve even the most stress-resistant athletes. At the same time, there is little doubt that Bolshunov will cope with the negativity that has fallen on him, even justified. And there is confidence that as soon as a loophole appears with a return to the World Cup, the entire sports world will see the same skier who took three golds at the last Olympics.
