BEIJING, China — Laurie Blouin, who was aiming for a podium finish in the high jump event on Tuesday at the Beijing Olympics, had to settle for 8th place due to a fall on her last jump.

Austrian Anna Gasser, Olympic champion in the event in PyeongChang, managed to defend her title with a total of 185.50 points.

New Zealand’s Zoi Sadowski Synnott, who won the slopestyle event in Beijing, took the silver medal with 177.00 points.

The Japanese Kokomo Murase, 171.50 points completed the podium.

Outstripped by a quarter of points before the last round, Gasser produced an almost perfect third round which allowed him to win with a cumulative score of 185.50 points.

When her title was announced, the other competitors threw themselves on her to congratulate the 30-year-old snowboarder, who in 2018 had become the first Olympic champion in the discipline.

New Zealander Zoi Sadowski Synnott took the silver medal (177.00 pts). She thus completes her collection of Olympic medals after the gold won on February 6 in slopestyle and the bronze won in big air in Pyeongchang in 2018.

The bronze medal went to the Japanese Kokomo Murase (171.50 pts).

The combined of Blouin’s two best jumps scored 115.00 points.

The Quebecer just missed landing on her first jump and was therefore awarded a score of 13.50 points.

She recovered well on her second run with a score of 86.25 points thanks to a 1080 degree rotation.

The 25-year-old athlete went all out on her last jump with a spectacular maneuver, but she missed her landing. A score of 28.75 points was awarded to him for this jump.

Blouin, from Stoneham, had taken the 4th rung in qualifying.

The other Canadian in the running, Jasmine Baird, scored 130.00 points, placing her in 7th place. She finished 10th in qualifying.

Blouin was content with 12th place in the big jump four years ago, at the Pyeongchang Games.

On February 6, she finished just off the podium in the slopestyle event.
