Even without playing, Brad Gushue and Canada managed to qualify for the men’s curling semi-final on Wednesday at the Beijing Games.
The defeats of Switzerland and the Russian Olympic Committee on the night allowed Canada to secure at least the necessary fourth place.
Gushue is third in the standings with a 5-3 record and had one game left against Great Britain.
Canadian women remain hopeful
Canadian Jennifer Jones defeated American Tabitha Peterson 7-6 Tuesday night in the women’s tournament.
It was a third straight win for Canada, who improved their record to 4-3 to improve their chances of making the playoffs.
The Canadian team started the day in sixth place overall, tied with South Korea’s EunJung Kim. The top four teams advance to the medal round.
Jones will face China’s Yu Han later in the evening. Canada will wrap up the round robin with Denmark’s Madeleine Dupoint on Thursday.
Heading into the afternoon matchups in the men’s tournament, Canadian Brad Gushue sat alone in third place with a 5-3 record.
Gushue and his foursome weren’t in action on Wednesday and are due to complete the round robin by facing Britain’s Bruce Mouat on Thursday.
