The ROC beat Sweden 2-1 in a penalty shootout to advance to the men’s hockey gold medal game on Friday at the Beijing Games.

The Russian representatives will therefore face Finland in the grand final, which shut out Slovakia 2-0 yesterday.

Slovakia and Sweden will battle for bronze on Saturday morning.

After a scoreless first period, the Russians opened the scoring in the second through Anton Slepyshev, assisted by Pavel Karnaukhov and Yegor Yakovlev.

Sweden eventually tied the game with just over 13 minutes remaining in the game. Defenseman Jonathan Pudas made a shot that was deflected by Henrik Tommernes. Goalkeeper Ivan Fedotov blocked the shot first but Anton Lander jumped on the rebound.

After an overtime period during which the two goalkeepers were reported, the penalty shootout was necessary.

Swede Lucas Wallmark scored the first goal in the second round after a successful fake shot, then Nikita Gusev replied immediately. Joakim Nordstrom then easily beat the Russian keeper to regain the lead. The ROC tied the game in the fifth round before sealing the game in the eighth round with Arseny Gritsyuk’s winning goal on a shot that hit inside the post.
