The Swiss Fanny Smith, downgraded in the skicross final of the Beijing Olympics on February 17, finally recovers the bronze medal at the expense of the German Daniela Maier, the International Ski Federation (FIS) said on Saturday.
Fanny Smith (29), already a bronze medalist in 2018, was downgraded from 3rd to 4th place after the race, the jury finding that she had embarrassed the German with an illicit movement, triggering the anger of the skier and the Swiss clan.
“The appeal board met four times to review both the videos and the written arguments for hours […] concluding that the proximity of the runners at this time of the race made this action unintentional and inevitable”, writes the FIS in a press release sent nine days after the race, while the Olympics have ended since February 20.
With this 3rd place, Switzerland won a 15th medal in this edition of the Olympics, with Germany down to 26 medals.
