The majority of the surveyed members of the council of the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) were in favor of the return of Russian athletes to international competitions, NRK reports, citing a source.

On Tuesday, the FIS Council voted against the participation of athletes from Russia and Belarus in the qualifying competitions for the 2026 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in neutral status.

According to the source, before the final decision was made, a survey was conducted among national FIS member associations before the meeting, in which 60% of those who voted were in favor of the return of the Russians, 40% were against. A total of 47 of the 141 FIS member countries took part in the voting.

– No comments. It was the council’s decision. “Ultimately we came to a decision and now we need to focus on the Olympic Games,” said FIS head Johan Elias.

Russian athletes have been suspended from participation in competitions under the auspices of the FIS since 2022.

Ishmuratova – about appealing to CAS to remove biathletes: “The chances are low, but it’s better to do something than wait for manna from heaven”

Two-time Olympic biathlon champion Svetlana Ishmuratova told Match TV that the appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the exclusion of Russian biathletes from international competitions is unlikely to be satisfied, but we must hope for the best.

Earlier, the Minister of Sports of the Russian Federation, Chairman of the Russian Olympic Committee Mikhail Degtyarev said that the Russian side would appeal to CAS on December 10 due to the removal of biathletes from international competitions.

Russians have not been allowed to compete under the auspices of the International Biathlon Union (IBU) since 2022.

— Will contacting CAS bring us a positive result?

“Of course, there are very few chances here, but it’s better to try to do something than just sit and wait for manna from heaven.” As they say, hope dies last – we’ll see,” Ishmuratova told Match TV.
