Bolshunov unexpectedly withdrew from the Russian Cup stage. What happened to the titled skier?

The next season for the titled Russian skier Alexander Bolshunov is not going too well so far. There are no victories, but there are plenty of scandals. Before the start of the next stage of the Russian Cup in Kirovo-Chepetsk, the three-time Olympic champion unexpectedly withdrew.

From December 26 to 28, the fifth stage of the PhosAgro Russian Cup in cross-country skiing is taking place in Kirovo-Chepetsk. But, unfortunately, the three-time Olympic champion did not start, which became known just before the start of the stage.
“Sasha Bolshunov, unfortunately, will not perform at the Russian Cup in Kirovo-Chepetsk,” wrote Match TV journalist Andrei Romanov on the Telegram channel.
Having learned the news about Bolshunov skipping the stage, ski racing fans began to put forward a variety of hypotheses to explain Alexander’s absence. Tired, sick, offended by journalists? Maybe he doesn’t want to see the “voice of biathlon” who went to the stage in Kirovo-Chepetsk?

Bolshunov’s season has really been difficult so far. There are podiums, but there have been no victories at the Russian Cup stages yet. Given all the accompanying circumstances, is it any wonder that fans were ready to see something global in Bolshunov’s skipping the stage, even to the point of boycotting tournaments? But no, everything turned out to be much more prosaic. The head coach of the Russian cross-country skiing team, Yuri Borodavko, told what really happened to the Russian skier.
— Alexander fell ill after Izhevsk and stayed at home. Apparently, it’s the flu, like many athletes. He interacted with fans a lot, so maybe he picked it up there. I hope that he will soon return to duty,” Soviet Sport quotes Borodavko.
Let’s hope that Bolshunov will really recover soon and return to competition. Unfortunately, Alexander is not going to have the Olympics this season, but there are still plenty of Russian Cup stages ahead. In Kazan, Syktyvkar, Apatity and Kirovsk, fans are eager to see one of the most popular skiers on the planet live. And in Kirovo-Chepetsk, ski racing fans will be pleased with other strong athletes.

Belarusian Anton Smolsky and Russian Natalia Shevchenko became the winners of the skiing and biathlon qualification “TechnoNIKOL. Race of Champions” in Ryazan among biathletes.
Smolsky covered 5 km in 13 minutes 19.8 seconds and made one miss on four shooting ranges. Second place went to Alexander Kornev (+16.0; 2 misses), third place went to Alexander Povarnitsyn (+22.0; 2). Three-time Olympic bronze medalist Eduard Latypov showed the fifth result (+26.9; 3).
Shevchenko avoided mistakes and became the best among women – 14 minutes 18.6 seconds. Irina Kazakevich (+23.9; 1) had the second time, Belarusian Dinara Smolskaya (+32.5; 1) took third place.

“Race of Champions” in biathlon and skiing: when does it start, where to watch online qualifications on January 3
The first start of the TECHNONICOL Race of Champions in biathlon and skiing will take place on January 3 in Ryazan.
On the first day, the athletes will perform in qualifications, based on the results of which the lineups for the mixed relay will be formed. The Match TV channel will show the qualifying races live from 11:30 Moscow time.
10 teams will take part in the relay, each with 4 athletes: a skier, a skier, a biathlete and a biathlete.

Regarding the readiness of the stadium, I can say that the weather has been helping us as much as possible in recent days. Preparations are in full swing, the trails are covered with both natural and artificial snow. Worries about lack of snow are a thing of the past; there is no longer a shortage of snow.
