Super sensation at the Russian Cup. The country’s best skiers lost to an average biathlete

But in the final race there was no place for a representative of a related sport.

The men’s sprint race at the Russian Cup stage in Kirovo-Chepetsk presented many surprises. Even before the start, Alexander Bolshunov dropped out of the fight. One of the leaders of the sprint classification, Alexander Terentyev, unexpectedly failed in qualifying. And in the final race, the leader of the season, Sergei Ardashev, remained without a victory.

But in the company of the strongest skiers, the biathlete managed to make some noise!

Sensation from a biathlete

On Saturday, December 27, in Kirovo-Chepetsk, as part of the 5th stage of the PhosAgro Russian Cup in cross-country skiing, the best men’s sprint was determined. The day before it became known that three-time Olympic champion Alexander Bolshunov would not compete for health reasons. The rest of the strongest, including the leader of the overall standings Sergei Ardashev, as well as the 2022 Olympics medalist Alexander Terentyev, were in action.

It is curious that in such a company the best qualifying time was shown by Andrey Vyukhin, who is not a skier at all, but a biathlete. By the way, a participant in the Russian Cup stage from another sport left the second number of the sprint competition, Alexander Terentyev, without a place in the quarterfinals, who took 31st place in qualifying, not making it into the coveted thirty quarterfinalists.

And Vyukhin continued the fight. In the first quarterfinal, he was accompanied by the most experienced 2018 Olympic medalist Andrei Larkov. The biathlete beat the 36-year-old skier, but could not get into the top two in the race. It was problematic to count on advancing to the semifinals as a lucky loser, since the race was not the fastest. And yet, for the time being, the intrigue remained. Only after the results of the third quarterfinal race did it become clear that the rest would be possible without the biathletes.

Powerful company

After the finish, Vyukhin complained about his lack of experience and looked a little upset. The skiers, it seems, did not grieve much because of this loss and continued to fight with each other. In it, several titled athletes dropped out of the medal contenders, including Ivan Yakimushkin, vice-champion of the 2022 Olympics at a distance of 50 kilometers, as well as Denis Spitsov, champion of the Beijing Games in the relay. But the leader of the season, Ardashev, advanced confidently to the semi-finals and retained good chances of overall victory.

The semifinal races turned out to be, perhaps, not entirely equal in composition. In the first one, mostly young people ran, and they did it slowly. Nikita Rodionov and Konstantin Tiunov succeeded in tactical combat. In the second race a powerful company entered the fray. Sergey Ardashev and Denis Filimonov reached the final directly, Sergey Volkov and Ivan Gorbunov showed the best time of the remaining contenders for places in the main race.

In the final, Ardashev immediately took the leading position, as befits the owner of the yellow jersey. For the time being, the rivals did not object, but in the end, of course, everyone tried to push the leader. Ivan Gorbunov challenged his opponent relatively early and ultimately left Sergei without a victory. The season leader finished the sprint in second position, while Konstantin Tiunov snatched bronze at the very finish.

On Sunday, men’s and women’s skiathlons will be held at the Russian Cup stage.

“The weather has been helping us as much as possible in recent days. Concerns about lack of snow are a thing of the past” – Director of the “Race of Champions”

Problems with snow for participants of the TechnoNIKOL ski and biathlon. “The Race of Champions” should not happen in Ryazan, said competition director, executive director of the Russian Biathlon Union (RBU) Alexander Pak.

On Monday, the RBU press service reported that three-time Olympic champion in cross-country skiing Alexander Bolshunov will not compete in the Race of Champions due to illness. The last participant in the race among skiers was Egor Mitroshin.

— We have decided on the final composition of the Race of Champions. The last vacant place among the skiers was taken by Egor Mitroshin. We were really looking forward to Alexander Bolshunov, but, unfortunately, he fell ill and even missed the Russian Cup stage in Kirovo-Chepetsk.

We have a forced replacement among the biathletes: instead of Anastasia Shevchenko, Inna Tereshchenko will perform, yesterday’s junior, who at the recent stage of the Alfa-Bank Commonwealth Cup in Tchaikovsky twice became a silver medalist.

Regarding the readiness of the stadium, I can say that the weather has been helping us as much as possible in recent days. Preparations are in full swing, the trails are covered with both natural and artificial snow. Worries about lack of snow are a thing of the past; there is no longer a shortage of snow. I am sure that on January 3 we will meet the athletes and spectators in full combat readiness,” Soviet Sport quotes Pak as saying.
