Deceased biathlete Bakken will be given a starting number in the sprint at the World Cup in Oberhof
The International Biathlon Union (IBU) is organizing a farewell ceremony for Siewert Bakken before the sprint race at the World Cup in Oberhof, NRK reports, citing the IBU.
The race will begin with a minute of silence in memory of the athlete, and the Norwegian team will start wearing mourning armbands. The IBU also confirmed that Bakken will be assigned the first number in the race. Thus, biathlete number two will be the first to start.
The death of 27-year-old Bakken became known on December 23. The Norwegian Biathlon Association said the athlete was wearing a hypoxic mask when his body was found in a hotel room in Italy.
The sprint race in Oberhof will take place on January 8th.
