Olympic medalist in biathlon Yevgeny Garanichev is preparing to compete at the summer stage of the Commonwealth Cup in Sochi, said coach of the Russian national team Sergei Bashkirov.
Last season, Garanichev performed at the first stage of the World Cup in Östersund, where he took 113th place in the sprint. After that, the athlete was sent to the IBU Cup.
– National teams are expected to perform at the Commonwealth Cup, we will be told in other starts, I believe, in which teams the athletes will compete. They usually represent the regions in domestic competitions. It is clear that everyone will run at the Russian Cup, without restrictions. We will continue to proceed from quotas and results,” Bashkirov told Match TV.
– Where can Garanichev and Eliseev show themselves? After last year’s Östersund, both seemed to have been eliminated.
– We have not eliminated these athletes, we are watching them. Garanichev, I know, works with personal trainer Maxim Kugaevsky, is preparing to perform at the summer Commonwealth Cup in Sochi. There is no information on Matthew. At the beginning of the preparatory period, some health indicators did not allow him to obtain a medical clearance. Whether this situation has changed, I cannot say.
The specialist also noted that none of the athletes in his group plans to change sports citizenship.
– If the quarantine period is canceled when changing sports citizenship, many will leave, what do you think?
– Hard to say. But at the moment, judging by the guys from my group, nothing hints at this, there are no offended ones,” he added.
Biathletes from Russia and Belarus will take part in the Commonwealth Cup. The tournament will consist of five stages (two in summer and three in winter).
