Hungarian speed skater Shaoang Liu has tested positive for COVID-19, ten days before the start of the 2022 Beijing Olympics (February 4-20), the Hungarian Skating Federation announced on Monday.

This contamination could compromise the participation, at least at the start of the Olympics, of this athlete who had won in 2018 with his teammates the first Winter Olympic gold in the history of his country, in the 5,000 m short track relay in PyeongChang. .

Participants must provide two negative PCR tests within 96 and 72 hours of their departure for China. Those contaminated less than 30 days ago must present two additional negative tests, spaced at least 24 hours apart.

Shaoang Liu, 23, will therefore not be able to fly to Beijing on Wednesday with the Hungarian team, which also includes his older brother, Sandor Liu Shaolin. Both were born in Budapest, to a Hungarian mother and a Chinese father who had been established in the country for thirty years.

The skater has no symptoms and continues to train in the hope of being able to leave quickly, the federation said in a statement, adding that all have been living in a health bubble for several days.
