The National Youth Handball defeated Saudi Arabia with Melina Merkouri 31-22 to start their 24th World Championship with a right foot.

Our youth national team went into the 24th World Cup with a right hand when they defeated Saudi Arabia 31-22 in the premiere.

This win is significant in terms of qualifying for the “16” as our representative group now desperately needs a win over Cuba on Wednesday afternoon (21/6-18:00) to secure a ticket to the next stage.

In front of the Greek crowd, in the closed “Melina Merkouri”, our national team started nervously and fell behind 4:6 in the 10th minute, while goalkeeper Abualwah stopped the Greek internationals five times. Gradually, the Greek team found solutions, Dimitris Babatzanidis improved his effectiveness in goal combined with the more aggressive defense of the national team, and in the 17th minute the national team took the lead 8:7 after two goals in a row by Papagiannis.

After Thanasis Papazoglou scored three goals in a row, the representative group got away 12:9 in the 25th minute. With momentum in favor of the national team and Babatzanidis, who “built a wall” in goal, the national team reached +5 (15-10) at the end of the first half, showing that they completely controlled the game.

Having gained speed and despite the fact that they played almost 4 minutes with one player less, the national team increased the difference to 19:12 in the 37th minute. The Saudis posed no threat to the Greek side, who gradually widened the gap and took a 26-17 lead in the 52nd minute.
