The Russian forward of the Boston Bruins system, Georgy Merkulov, said that the level of play in the American Hockey League (AHL) is very high, but the main goal of the hockey player is to get into the NHL.
In April, Merkulov signed a rookie contract with Boston. The striker spent the 2021/22 season in the National Collegiate Athletic Association for the Ohio University team. The Russian has played 36 matches, scoring 34 (20+14) points.
– Like everyone else, I have a dream to one day get into the NHL. I will try to get a chance in these three years. Most of all from Boston I like Pastrnak, – Sport24 quotes the words of 21-year-old Merkulov. – In the AHL, the Boston farm club has a lot of strong guys who have already played in the NHL. Even the AHL level is just an asshole. I didn’t expect that. It is believed that the NCAA student league is not bad, but it simply cannot be compared with the AHL. We need to cling to the composition, and then we’ll see.
In the NCAA, players don’t get paid, they study, and hockey takes a backseat. Everyone on the team dreams of getting into the NHL, that’s every guy’s goal. But also the parents of the guys insist that they study, explaining that a small percentage gets into the NHL, so a higher education is needed. In America, if you want to find a good job, then you can’t go anywhere without education. You can only go to McDonald’s.
