Five-time Stanley Cup champion with the Montreal Canadiens Guy Lafleur has died at the age of 70.
For the last few years of his life, LaFleur battled lung cancer, and three years ago he underwent open-heart surgery.
We are deeply saddened by the news of the death of Guy Lafleur. He has had a remarkable career and has always been simple and accessible to the fans. He was one of the greatest players in our club. Montreal will provide all the support the LaFleur family needs,” said Canadiens president Jeff Molson.
LaFleur was selected in the NHL Entry Draft in 1971, having spent most of his career with Montreal, with whom he won the Major League Trophy five times in 1973, 1976, 1977, 1978 and 1979. He also played for the New York Rangers and Quebec.
In 2017, LaFleur was named one of the top 100 NHL players of all time by the league.
