CSKA head coach Sergei Fedorov admitted on Match TV that he did not expect to win the Gagarin Cup in his debut season.
On Saturday, the army team won the Gagarin Cup, beating Metallurg 4-3 in the series. Fedorov became the first debutant coach in league history to win a major trophy.
– Could you imagine this in the debut season?
“Perhaps there were some fantasies, but I understood that this was not serious,” Fedorov said. — It requires a lot of work and titanic dedication of our players. Therefore, I did not fantasize too much. I wanted to understand what combinations are needed and what to work on in order to achieve a result – from the first round to the last game. Thanks to my coaching staff and assistants, we managed to find solutions. And of course, the guys rallied – there were eight newcomers, including the head coach. It’s incredible! Can’t even believe it yet.
Before the match, after the anthem, you took a deep breath. Remember your thoughts?
– Yes I remember. There were many thoughts, but, honestly, I’m not ready to talk about them now. There were nerves, but as soon as the game started, they immediately got to work. All thoughts were only about how to correctly put the players and bring the result.
CSKA won the Gagarin Cup for the second time in history.
