The American encroached on Ovechkin’s cool record! The Russian has almost no chance

But the Russian hockey player will only be happy for his dangerous competitor.

Russian hockey player Alexander Ovechkin’s pursuit of Wayne Gretzky’s eternal record continues to be one of the main intrigues of the NHL for the coming seasons. But the league doesn’t live by Washington’s captain alone. Its achievements may also be undermined by younger competitors.

So American Auston Matthews came close to Alexander’s record.

Record of the century

The 2007/08 season was the best in Ovechkin’s career in terms of sniper achievements. Alexander the Great managed to score 65 goals. This result was the best in the 21st century. Then it seemed that the Russian striker, who was in his prime, was capable of updating his best figure more than once, but he still stands.

This happened because teams began to more often abandon a flashy attacking style in favor of pragmatism and the results that defensive hockey gave. But still, the achievement of the Russian player was approached several times.

In the 2011/12 season, Steven Stamkos scored 60 goals. Ovechkin himself scored fifty more times, but never managed to cross the 60-goal mark in a season. But last season, two hockey players reached this milestone. David Pastrnak, who took second place in the sniper race, scored 61 times, and the winner, Connor McDavid, was one goal shy of Ovechkin’s record.

“This will be really cool”

In recent years, there was another hockey player who reached the 60-goal mark. Auston Matthews did it in the 2021-22 season. The American is now perhaps the only hockey player in the league who can seriously compete with Ovechkin in the fight for the league’s sniper record. Auston has only 363 goals so far, but he is on Ovechkin’s schedule.

Matthews has also looked great this season. Before the away match with Montreal, the Toronto forward was two goals away from Alexander’s achievement. But the proximity of the record does not bother the American. In the second period, he added another goal to his sniper tally. Auston produced another masterpiece, throwing a turnaround shot into the top corner from an extremely awkward position.

Toronto still has six matches left until the end of the regular season. The likelihood that Ovechkin’s record will fall is very high. But Alexander is not afraid of this; on the contrary, he sincerely roots for Matthews. Back in March, the Russian admitted that he wants the Maple Leafs striker to become the best sniper in the 21st century.

– I hope he succeeds. Maybe he will score 70 goals, who knows. He is a special player and fun to watch. I’m rooting for him. He will go down in history if he can do this. “It will be really cool,” Ovechkin said in an interview with the press.
