Two-time Gagarin Cup winner Sergei Konkov explained the decision of the Avtomobilist management to extend the contract with the team’s head coach Nikolai Zavarukhin.
On Friday, the residents of Yekaterinburg announced the extension of the agreement with Zavarukhin. The contract with the specialist runs until the end of May 2026. The previous one was valid until the end of the 2024/25 season.
— The team demonstrated results. There is an understanding of how the game can be strengthened. I think that Ekaterinburg has had a great season. They always love hockey there, and when a team shows its best result in the history of the KHL, there is a desire to improve. We need to look at the transfer market to see who can strengthen the team. This is a task for the off-season. Perhaps there are already some agreements with the players,” RB Sport quotes Konkov as saying.
Avtomobilist took fifth place in the Eastern Conference last season and for the first time in the club’s history reached the semi-finals of the KHL playoffs, where they lost to the future Gagarin Cup winner Metallurg Magnitogorsk (3–4).
