Russian forward Alexander Ovechkin informed Washington Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan that he approves of changes to the Capitals’ roster ahead of the new NHL season, the Washington Times reports.

Last season, Washington was eliminated from contention in the first round of the Stanley Cup.

The Washington Times reports that Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan has received Ovechkin’s blessing for the Capitals’ upcoming roster changes. The publication claims that MacLellan received a thumbs-up emoji from Ovechkin in approval of the addition of Canadian forward Pierre-Luc Dubois to the team.

MacLellan also, with Ovechkin’s approval, strengthened the Capitals with goaltender Logan Thompson and defenseman Jacob Chychran.

It is noted that the changes in the Washington roster before the new season are intended to help Ovechkin break Wayne Gretzky’s record.

Ovechkin is 38 years old and has been playing for Washington since 2005. The Russian forward is second on the list of all-time NHL snipers with 853 goals, behind only Canadian Gretzky (894).
