The transfer to Nizhny Novgorod Torpedo could have a positive effect on the play of defenseman Vyacheslav Voynov, believes former player of several KHL clubs Nikita Shchitov.

On Monday, Torpedo signed a contract with Voynov. The hockey player’s agreement with the Nizhny Novgorod team is for one season. Earlier, the player’s agent Stanislav Romanov told Match TV that the 34-year-old defenseman had terminated his contract with Kazan’s Ak Bars.

– He is a good, experienced defender, there are not many like him. He will be useful in Torpedo. Voynov can show a game that he has not shown for a long time. Perhaps he will be involved a lot, score points, enjoy hockey.

— There is an opinion that Voynov is a slow player for Igor Larionov’s system.

— He played the way they demanded of him at Ak Bars, not to get forward, play strictly, not run a lot. Why won’t he be able to get involved in the attack at Torpedo? He doesn’t need to run like crazy, the main thing is to get involved correctly, to be in the place where the puck will be, and Voynov knows how to read the game. You can run around like crazy, but you won’t be of any use, you’ll just run around and get in the way of your teammates, — Shchitov told RB Sport.

Last season, Voynov scored 14 points (1+13) in 40 games of the KHL regular championship. As part of the Russian national team, Voynov won the Olympic Games in 2018 and also became a silver medalist at the 2022 Olympics. The defenseman is a two-time Stanley Cup winner as part of Los Angeles.

The new KHL season starts on September 3, and Torpedo will host Severstal from Cherepovets a day later.
