Hungary and Slovenia want to host the 2023 Ice Hockey World Cup, taken from Russia
Hungary and Slovenia have applied to host the 2023 Ice Hockey World Championship, according to the website of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF).
The teams of the two countries won the right to play in the tournament next year thanks to their successful performance at the World Championships in the second division.
It is expected that the matches of the tournament will be held in Budapest and Ljubljana. The arena in the Hungarian capital was opened in December last year, it hosted matches of the European Men’s Handball Championship. Hungary has never hosted the men’s ice hockey world championship in the top division. The tournament was held in Ljubljana in 1966.
The tentative dates for the 2023 World Cup are May 5-21. This year the tournament will be held in Finnish Tampere and Helsinki.
The IIHF announced in April that Russia was denied the right to host the 2023 World Cup, which was supposed to be held in St. Petersburg. The Russian Ice Hockey Federation (FHR) said it would appeal the decision.
