The retired Russian hockey player scored more than Ovechkin. Washington needs Bogdan

True, this did not save the Russian team from a second defeat in a row.

While Washington captain Alexander Ovechkin continues to collect exclusively assists, a worthy replacement from Russia is growing up in the Capitals system. Forward Bogdan Trineev not only demonstrated his sniper talent, but also repeated the achievement of the legendary forward of the capital club.

Washington doesn’t need those

Trineev moved to North America back in 2022. Two years earlier, the hockey player was selected by Washington in the fourth round of the NHL draft. In just over two seasons, Bogdan failed to gain a foothold in the team.

The hockey player was involved exclusively in the Capitals’ preseason matches. If the previous two years Bogdan was allotted only one match, then this preseason he managed to stay for three games. Perhaps the goal scored in the match against Boston, in which the Capitals won with a score of 5:2, played a role.

Washington failed to build on the success in the following matches, and on October 1, Bogdan was sent to the Hershey Bears farm club, for which he had already played more than a hundred matches.

— A dream team, it’s a pleasure to play with such people, a well-deserved trophy and a bright imprint on our lives. “Once a bear, always a bear,” Bogdan wrote on social networks in 2024.

Matched Ovechkin

Bogdan started his next season with the Bears modestly, scoring no points in a game against the Syracuse Crunch. Bogdan could increase his own chances of returning to Washington with the same team a day later.

This time the forward performed better, scoring an important goal that helped the Bears score their first point of the season. Trineev opened the scoring, and did it in the minority. The Russian ran into a fast break after a mistake by his opponents and beat the goalkeeper.

This happened already in the 4th minute. Another minute later, Graham Clark doubled Hershey’s lead. But the Washington farm club failed to defend the winning score. The opponents managed to win back and send the match into overtime, where they won with a score of 3:2 OT.

“I think we did a much better job.” Of course, we will make mistakes, we will lose the puck, but we played very well in the neutral zone, and it showed because we had a lot of chances,” the Hershey Bears official website quotes head coach Derek King as saying.

Of course, Bogdan still has time to grow and grow even to the current level of Capitals captain Ovechkin, but not everyone is destined to score 900 goals in the NHL. Someone has to do the grunt work in the minority, which Bogdan does very well.

He now has more goals in preseason and regular season games than Alexander the Great. Although, of course, it’s easier to score in the AHL than in the NHL.

It’s also funny that in North America, both hockey players scored the same number of shorthanded goals – five each, although it took Bogdan a decade and a half less. The only pity is that all of them were not scored in the NHL.
