Ovechkin made the Canadian a laughing stock! And inflicting dirty revenge

And the Russian acted exclusively within the rules.

Washington scored points in nine matches in a row, but completely failed the short road series, losing two meetings with a total score of 1:10. Globally, nothing terrible happened for the Capitals, because the capital club ranks fourth in the East and is still fighting for leadership in the conference. The decline can be attributed to emotional fatigue after a fantastic period, as well as to injuries to the main hockey players. For example, Logan Thompson had to start four games in a row while Charlie Lindgren was recovering from a minor injury.

To prevent the bad streak from dragging on, Spencer Carbury’s team needs to beat Toronto at the Capital One Arena. Given the Leafs’ inconsistent form, Washington has every chance of success. The focus of the upcoming match will be the duel between the captains – the greatest sniper Alexander Ovechkin and Auston Matthews, who, according to North American experts, can overtake the Russian in goals in the regular season.

In terms of performance, Matthews, of course, can try to compete with Ovechkin, but in the power game the American has very little chance. But the leader of the Capitals has more than once given nightmares to the players of the Canadian club.

Powerful power

The Washington captain entered the home match against Toronto on December 17, 2022 with a five-game points streak, during which he scored 7+3. Capitals fans expected him to continue pumping up his statistics and get on the scoresheet again. However, in the first period, which ended with a score of 2:1 in favor of the hosts, the Russian failed to excel.

After the break, Alexander still found himself in the spotlight, but thanks to a powerful power move. In the second period, the leader of the capital’s club ran up and crashed into Conor Timmins at full speed: the blow was so strong that the visiting Canadian defender flew over the boards and ended up on the Washington bench!

It’s amazing how easily the Russian sent an opponent weighing almost 90 kg “flying”. At this moment, the entire Capital One Arena roared approvingly, and the Washington hockey players openly laughed.

The Leafs players wanted to take revenge on Ovechkin, but they couldn’t do it within the rules. In the third period, Alexander Kerfoot played very dirty and even almost injured the Russian. Kerfoot drove into the Capitals captain’s leg at full speed from behind, dropping him to the ice. Afterwards, a small scuffle immediately began, because there were obvious complaints against the Toronto hockey player. However, it didn’t come to a fight, and Kerfoot received only two minutes.

Washington eventually won – 5:2. And although Ovechkin failed to score, the Leafs players remembered his power move for a long time. In the upcoming match between the teams, I would like to see not only a brilliant power play from the Russian, but also effective actions.

Coach of the Ukrainian national team: “Fans want to see us in the elite team. You still need experience”

Dmitry Khristich, the coach of the Ukraine national hockey team, made a 2025 prediction for the team. The main event was the World Championship in Division 1A, where the team only lost their chance to reach the elite league in the last match.

“I think the year has been positive. We won most of our matches. I also rate our performance in the World Championship positively. Many people probably wanted us to get into the elite league immediately, but I believe that we need to gain experience and confidence at this level. You have to believe in yourself and build on your experience by getting positive results against D1A teams and promotion teams that constantly jump from league to league.”

“We need to learn to play the full 60 minutes, to play against any opponent, to be tactically flexible… All these and many other nuances still need to be worked out,” Khristic said.
