North American Hockey League ECHL postpones 13 matches due to player strike
The North American East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) was forced to suspend the season due to a strike by hockey players, TSN reports.
13 regular-season games were postponed after the hockey union called a general strike. The union is demanding changes to the collective agreement on a number of points, such as travel arrangements, holiday breaks, guaranteed contracts, salary caps and off-season health insurance.
“Our members are simply seeking reasonable improvements that will allow them to work safely and earn a living while continuing to perform well. Despite the union’s repeated attempts to meet and begin negotiations, the league continues to communicate directly with players, bypassing the union’s role as the exclusive negotiator, said Brian Ramsey, executive director of the Professional Hockey Players Association.
The ECHL has 30 teams, 29 of which are based in the United States and one in Canada. The league is considered the third strongest in North America after the NHL and AHL.
