NHL. Matthews’ record, new East leader, Islanders and Colorado victories
Detroit, which recently became the East’s midseason mileage leader for the first time in 10 years, has already lost first place. The Wings lost to Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay finished first in the conference.
Yıldırım beat San Jose 7-3 and took the lead with seven wins in a row.
The New York Islanders beat Toronto 4:3 in overtime thanks to a double from Matthew Schaefer, the first overall pick in the 2025 draft, but Auston Matthews scored a pair of goals for Maple to become the best goal scorer in the history of the Canadian club.
Matthews scored 421 goals and beat the legendary Mats Sundin.
No one in the league can stop Colorado. The Avalanche beat Carolina for their 10th straight win, with Nathan MacKinnon scoring four points to move two points ahead of Connor McDavid in the scoring race.
McDavid scored a point in Edmonton’s game against Philadelphia, extending his point streak to 15 games, but the Oilers lost 2:5 to the Pilots.
