Detroit solemnly retired Sergei Fedorov’s number
The NHL club Detroit Red Wings held a ceremony at their home Little Caesars Arena to retire the number 91 under which Russian forward Sergei Fedorov played for the team.
The ceremony took place before the start of the NHL regular season match against Carolina. Fedorov, 56, took part in the ceremony with his family. A banner with the hockey player’s number and dates of his performances for the team was raised under the arches of the arena.
“The fact that number 91 will be under the arena arch is well deserved. It’s really cool that we get to witness this. Sit on the bench, listen to what Fedorov has to say, and watch the video. I know the fans will be delighted. “They feel that this is a long-awaited event, and he will rightfully be there, among the greatest players in the history of the Red Wings,” the Red Wings press service quotes team captain Dylan Larkin.
Fedorov played for Detroit from 1990 to 2003, won three Stanley Cups with the team and in 1994 became the first European to win the Hart Trophy, the prize for the most valuable player in the NHL.
