NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman expressed hope that this season will not be the last in the league for Russian Washington forward Alexander Ovechkin.

Ovechkin’s current contract with Washington expires after the 2025/26 season.

— I hope that the post-Ovechkin era will not come in the near future. This is Alex’s business. We respect any of his decisions. But I hope this season will not be the last of his NHL career. Ovi plays great,” journalist Tariq El-Bashir quotes Bettman on social networks.

Ovechkin has 994 goals in the NHL, including the playoffs, Wayne Gretzky’s record is 1016 goals. The 40-year-old Russian is the league record holder for goals in the regular season (917).

Ovechkin has scored 20 goals and provided 21 assists this season.
