Former head coach of the Russian national team Vyacheslav Bykov told Match TV that the leadership of the National Hockey League (NHL) may influence the decision of Russian Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin to continue his career in the league.
Earlier, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman expressed hope that this season would not be Ovechkin’s last in the league.
— The NHL commissioner said that he would like to see Ovechkin in the NHL. Can we say that they are afraid of losing their face?
— The NHL management must decide who their face is, they know best. In my opinion, the league can influence Ovechkin’s decision to continue his career in the NHL,” Bykov told Match TV.
Ovechkin has 994 goals in the NHL, including the playoffs, Wayne Gretzky’s record is 1016 goals. The 40-year-old Russian is the league record holder for goals in the regular season (917).
Ovechkin has scored 20 goals and provided 21 assists this season.
