Canadian specialist Mitch Love has been appointed head coach of the Shanghai Dragons, the press service of the KHL club reports.

The contract with the 41-year-old coach was concluded until the end of the 2026/27 season.

At the end of December, Gerard Galland, who was then the team’s head coach, missed the KHL regular season match against SKA St. Petersburg due to health reasons. Since then, the team has been led by Michael Kelly as acting head coach. On January 13, it was announced that Gallan had left his post as head coach of the Shanghai Dragons due to health problems.

On Saturday, the team lost away to Lokomotiv Yaroslavl in the Fonbet KHL Championship match – 0:2.

Since July 2023, Mitch Love has worked as an assistant coach for the NHL’s Washington Capitals. In September 2025, the club suspended the specialist from work, and in October dismissed him following an investigation due to allegations of domestic violence.

Previously, Love headed the Calgary Flames farm club in the AHL and coached the Saskatoon Blades team of the Western Hockey League (North American Junior League).

The Shanghai Dragons are in ninth place in the KHL Western Conference table with 43 points in 45 matches.
