Ice Hockey World Cup. Finland beat Canada in incredible gold match

The final of the World Ice Hockey Championship between Finland and Canada took place. It is curious that these two teams are fighting for gold for the third time in a row.

Finland won the final 4-3 in overtime. At the same time, Canada had a two-period advantage and were leading 1-0, but everything fell apart at the start of the third 20-minute period.

Maple first gave themselves two silly replacements on someone else’s half on the ice, and then the referee clearly made a mistake during another removal. Canada once fought 3 out of 5, but for the second time the Finns put pressure on the opponent. The home team returned to a double major, and in between these events, main goalkeeper Chris Drijer was injured.

His replacement, Matt Tomkins, literally missed the second shot.

Canada quickly rallied, but the opponent waited for his chance and scored another goal – 3:1. Looks like that was the end, but Maple is back again! Canada scored a goal in the 57th and 58th minutes (goalkeeper removed) and tied the score. Almost a repeat of the quarterfinal match against Sweden, where the Canadians came back with 0:3. Incredible character of the North American team.

And that’s a 3-on-3 overtime. Both teams had chances, but Canada was again summed up by suspension. A foul that wasn’t in the most critical situation gave the Finns a majority that they successfully converted. 4:3, Finland is the champion!

Finland had a great success: winning the Olympic gold and the World Championship in a year.

The Czech team finished the World Cup with the bronze medal, beating the USA.

Derby day in the NHL. New York and Florida Wars, 7 goals for Toronto, success for San Jose

The NHL returned after the Christmas break and several derbies took place on the first day of play.

New York Islanders beat the Rangers with a score of 2:0 on their home ice, extending their streak to five and taking second place in their league behind Carolina.

Another battle between neighbors Florida and Tampa Bay ended 4:2 in favor of the Lightning. Both teams in the Atlantic Group are in the top 4.

Maple won the Canadian derby between Toronto and Ottawa 7:5, while forward Auston Matthews scored three points. That’s right, Toronto is still second to last in the East.

In the west, Calgary won its derby against Edmonton 3-2, but Oilers captain Connor McDavid scored in 12 straight games.

Among other results, we highlight San Jose’s victory over Vancouver 6:3 thanks to McClean Celebrini’s 20th goal of the season, as well as table leaders Colorado’s hard-fought victory over Vegas 6:5 in the penalty shootout.

Junior World Hockey Championship. Victories for USA and Czech Republic, overtime for Canada and Latvia

The second day of competitions in the elite league of the U-20 World Youth Hockey Championship has ended.

After Slovakia’s victory against Germany in Group A, the host Americans took to the ice and defeated the Swiss team with a score of 2:1. The third goal of the tournament came from forward Will Zellers.

USA has two wins and first place in the group.

However, there was almost a sensation in group B. The Canadian team put the finishing touches on Latvia in overtime and won 2:1. It is interesting that Latvia unexpectedly beat Klenov a year ago but could not repeat this success.

For Canada, we highlight two points from forward Gavin McKenna, the likely first pick of the 2026 draft.

In another match, the Czech Republic defeated Denmark 7-2.

The first matches of the U-20 World Junior Hockey Championship, held in the elite league in the USA, have ended.

The current champion and host of the tournament defeated the German team without any problems with a score of 6:3 and scored three goals each in the first and second periods.

Forward Will Zellers scored two goals and one assist. Earlier in this group, Sweden beat Slovakia.

In Group B, Finland defeated Denmark 6-2, while Canada defeated the Czech Republic 7-5 with four goals in the third period in a tough match.
