Novikov compared the confrontation between Shesterkin and Vasilevsky with the duel between Pushkin and Dantes
Honored coach of Russia Yuri Novikov compared the confrontation between Russian goalkeepers Igor Shesterkin (New York Rangers) and Andrey Vasilevsky (Tampa Bay Lightning) in the semifinals of the Stanley Cup with the duel between Alexander Pushkin and Georges Dantes, noting that in the end, from rivals “one survives”.

– For me it is already certain that the struggle for the highest awards comes down to a duel of two goalkeepers who stand opposite each other and fight like Pushkin and Dantes. And other hockey players run between them, no offense will be said to them. Vasilevsky is understandable, out of competition, but Shesterkin shows just a beautiful game. We will cheer for both, but, unfortunately, only one survives in a duel. Our goalkeepers are distinguished by their love for their profession, despite the fact that this is not even a dog’s job, it is harder.
I think that the NHL should revise the contracts of all goalkeepers upwards, introduce a bonus for harm and remove goalkeepers from the payroll. And the level of understanding of the game, our hockey IQ is higher. I even feel sorry for the Canadian goalkeepers, because today they are late for the development of hockey, while the Russian ones are ahead of it. Therefore, Shesterkin vs Vasilevsky is just a fantastic super series.
Vasilevsky is a block, in texture, in size. Shesterkin compensates for the lack of size with an understanding of the game, a brilliant reaction. He’s even a better passing player than the defenders! It is difficult to say who will win this goalkeeper duel. The help of field players will be of great importance. They must understand responsibility. Defenders of the future should also be able to save their own gates, RB Sport quotes Novikov as saying.

Maple won the Canadian derby between Toronto and Ottawa 7:5, while forward Auston Matthews scored three points. That’s right, Toronto is still second to last in the East.
In the west, Calgary won its derby against Edmonton 3-2, but Oilers captain Connor McDavid scored in 12 straight games.

Junior World Hockey Championship. Victories for USA and Czech Republic, overtime for Canada and Latvia
The second day of competitions in the elite league of the U-20 World Youth Hockey Championship has ended.
After Slovakia’s victory against Germany in Group A, the host Americans took to the ice and defeated the Swiss team with a score of 2:1. The third goal of the tournament came from forward Will Zellers.
USA has two wins and first place in the group.
However, there was almost a sensation in group B. The Canadian team put the finishing touches on Latvia in overtime and won 2:1. It is interesting that Latvia unexpectedly beat Klenov a year ago but could not repeat this success.
For Canada, we highlight two points from forward Gavin McKenna, the likely first pick of the 2026 draft.
In another match, the Czech Republic defeated Denmark 7-2.

The first matches of the U-20 World Junior Hockey Championship, held in the elite league in the USA, have ended.
The current champion and host of the tournament defeated the German team without any problems with a score of 6:3 and scored three goals each in the first and second periods.
Forward Will Zellers scored two goals and one assist. Earlier in this group, Sweden beat Slovakia.
In Group B, Finland defeated Denmark 6-2, while Canada defeated the Czech Republic 7-5 with four goals in the third period in a tough match.
