The Russian Hockey Federation (FHR) has proposed to the teams of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) a new format for holding the championship, according to which the clubs will be divided into two new conferences, according to the website of the federation.
At the same time, the FHR explained that it did not put forward a proposal to divide the league into “strong” and “weak”.
– On Friday, information appeared in the media about the proposal of the FHR. At the same time, special emphasis was placed on dividing the league into “strong” and “weak” teams. This presentation is not true. The federation’s proposal is aimed at raising the level of the championship and strengthening competition. At the same time, all teams get a chance to compete for the main prize – the Gagarin Cup.
According to the proposal of the FHR, 12 teams that took the first 12 places at the end of the 2021/22 season will play in the first conference: CSKA, Metallurg, Traktor, SKA, Salavat Yulaev, Dynamo M, Avangard, Spartak , Ak Bars, Severstal, Lokomotiv and Dynamo Mn. The second conference will bring together 10 teams: Sibir, Neftekhimik, Torpedo, Barys, Avtomobilist, Amur, Vityaz, Sochi, Admiral and Kunlun. The proposed name of the conferences is the Yurzinov conference and the Yakushev conference.
In total, the teams will play 70 matches in the regular season. Each Conference 1 team will play 44 matches, and each Conference 2 team will play 36 matches.
– It is important to note that the conferences will not be isolated from each other: the teams of the two conferences will play one match each at home and the opponent’s field. Further, the teams of the first and second conferences will play additional matches within the framework of their conferences – according to the established procedure and the decision of the league. At the same time, teams from both conferences will compete for the playoffs, the federation said in a statement.
