The Russian Ice Hockey Federation (FHR) and the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) agreed on the structure of the 2022/23 season, and also agreed to work on changing the scheme for holding the Gagarin Cup, according to the website of the FHR.

Organizations will consider the possibility of refusing to hold the KHL playoffs within the framework of the West and East conferences.

— The cross-playoffs, regardless of the geographic division of the league, will become an important tool to increase the level of competition, intensity and rating of the KHL championship in the eyes of fans and sponsors. This is fully in line with the recommendations of the coaching council to increase the number of principled games that are important for both participants.

It is noted that the FHR and the KHL will create a working group that will work out options for the further development of the KHL championship during the season.
