Vyacheslav Fetisov said that in the situation with Fedotov, the law is not on the side of the goalkeeper

Two-time Olympic hockey champion Vyacheslav Fetisov told Gazeta.ru that in the situation with goalkeeper Ivan Fedotov, the law is not on his side, since all male Russian citizens are required to do military service if there are no restrictions.

On Friday, July 1, 25-year-old Fedotov was detained in St. Petersburg on suspicion of evading military service. The hockey player asked for medical assistance at the assembly point of the military registration and enlistment office, after which he was taken to the Botkin Infectious Diseases Hospital. Then the player was sent for an additional examination to the military medical academy, and then to the naval hospital. Later, Fedotov’s lawyer Alexei Ponomarev reported that his client had exacerbation of gastritis against the background of a nervous breakdown.

When was he due to serve in the military? During the Gagarin Cup to go to the army? I don’t even know what to say about this. All athletes, as citizens of the Russian Federation, are required to complete military service and fulfill their duty to their homeland. At one time there was a system, there were officers in CSKA. Other teams also thought about it in advance, and at draft age, the guys, to one degree or another, repaid their debt to their country. Now this system does not exist as such.

The topic turned out to be resonant, most likely, such a heated discussion could have been avoided. I don’t know if there were any agreements with the club or not, but the law is not on Ivan’s side, unfortunately.

As I understand it, Ivan must serve and will not be able to play in the NHL. I don’t know how much it will improve or worsen relations with the NHL. Probably, other points come into force here – first of all, compliance with the law. For example, the same Finnish players and other Europeans have constitutional draft duties. And before they go somewhere to play, they have to pay their military duty,” Fetisov said.
