Manchester United defeated Ipswich Town 5-2 at Old Trafford in the Premier League after recovering from a first-half deficit in pouring rain.
Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick and provided an assist as Michael Carrick's team responded to an opening weekend defeat by moving into the top half of the table.
Ipswich Town took the lead through Leif Davis in the 29th minute before Fernandes equalized five minutes before half-time to leave the match level at 1-1 at the break.
Reporting from Old Trafford, Daily Mail Sport journalist Nathan Salt noted that Manchester United delivered an emphatic response to their critics after going behind, with Marcus Rashford returning to the starting lineup alongside Kobbie Mainoo.
Controversial Goal and Handball Rule
Manchester United took the lead in the 56th minute through a Jacob Greaves own goal following a shot by Harry Maguire, a moment that altered the course of the match.
Maguire spoke to Sky Sports after the match regarding the fortuitous goal. "It wasn't a handball on purpose for sure, but I don't think it touched my fingers," Maguire said. "I actually dragged the shot a bit wide so I think it'll go down as an own goal unfortunately, but that's probably the reason that it counted. If it was my goal, they disallow it, which are the rules nowadays but thankfully, it was on our side and I think we deserved the win and that little bit of luck."
Under International Football Association Board rules, a goal is disallowed if the goalscorer handles the ball, even accidentally. However, because Maguire's shot was off target and went in via defender Greaves, the goal stood despite the handball contact.
The strike marked a Premier League milestone for the hosts. Manchester United have now benefitted from 80 own goals in Premier League history, overtaking Liverpool's total of 79 to become the leading beneficiary of own goals in the competition.
Ipswich Manager Reaction and Match Penalties
Ipswich manager Gary O'Neil reflected on the crucial sequence after keeping his starting XI unchanged following their opening day victory. Speaking to Sky Sports, O'Neil described his side as "really unlucky" to fall behind 2-1.
O'Neil said: "Really unlucky to be 2-1 down, really unlucky - two of the most unlucky goals you will see, but then not good enough to get back into it. We got punished by a very good side. To beat Manchester United at Old Trafford you need the moments to go in your favour and they didn't. Rules can go against you, or a deflection, there are lots of things that can happen in a game that are beyond your control."
Addressing the handball controversy, O'Neil added: "It is a complicated rule - handball if it's the goal scorer but not if it takes a deflection and was heading off the target. I think that is tough for a referee. But no problem. I'm not here to moan about refs. We get no points, at Old Trafford a lot of people leave with no points but we leave with an understanding of where to get better."
Despite the result, O'Neil remained positive about Ipswich's early season form. "We have three points from two tough games. A good start for us. It is the Premier League, the lads understand there will be highs and lows. We don't want there to be too many lows but the lads are fine in there. They understand."
Fernandes Hat-trick and Manager Assessment
Manchester United capitalized on their momentum when Fernandes scored from the penalty spot in the 61st minute to make it 3-1. Fernandes completed his hat-trick seven minutes later in the 68th minute to extend the lead to 4-1.
Bryan Mbeumo added United's fifth goal in the 82nd minute, before Ipswich substitute Chuba Akpom scored in the 91st minute to conclude the match at 5-2.
Fernandes delivered a comprehensive performance across 90 minutes. The Portuguese midfielder recorded 90 touches, completed 54 of 63 passes, hit five accurate long balls out of nine, registered three shots on target from eight attempts, created three chances, created one big chance, scored three goals, completed two of three take-ons, and provided one assist.
Manchester United manager Michael Carrick praised the squad's response on Sky Sports following their previous defeat. "It was a good win. It was a really good win in the end. We played some really good football. The biggest thing today was the mentality of the boys to overcome setbacks," Carrick said. "We're going to have them and it depends on how you deal with them. I was really pleased with that. It's easy to look at the result but the mentality and the stubbornness really pleased me. We controlled the game pretty well for the most part. A lot of our play was looking on the way to how we wanted it to look. The boys took it on really well and we were fabulous."
On Fernandes' individual display, Carrick added: "He showed his quality today. Bruno did what he's good at. He's had a big week winning awards. Three goals and a fantastic performance. There were a lot of positives with and without the ball but it's the whole mentality dealing with it and trusting each other. Last week didn't go for us and we accept that. Today was a lot better. We're not getting carried away. We were down last week but everything wasn't wrong. We can still get better, we haven't cracked it. We'll get ready for the next."
Carrick also commented on squad rotation and transfer business: "Part of it was planned going into these first couple of weeks to give players minutes for what's ahead. Everyone has been on the pitch, barring one or two. We have the squad to do that. I think we've done some fantastic business and we've done it very well with the money we've spent. We're making the most of the situation that we have. The spirit is good and they want to fight for each other."
Mainoo Performance and Pundit Debate
United full-back Luke Shaw praised Kobbie Mainoo's influence in midfield when speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live. "I would like to speak about Kobbie," Shaw said. "I think today he was world-class, so so good, the way he controlled the game and the way he drove us forward. I know Bruno scored the hat-trick but I would put Mainoo down for man of the match. He is so young and it is such a joy to see him growing. For me he was phenomenal today. A real leader in that middle."
Mainoo dictated the tempo in the second half after returning to the starting team, showing no signs of summer rust despite earlier questions surrounding former manager Ruben Amorim's decision to bench him in previous matches.
However, former Manchester United full-back Paul Parker offered a contrasting view on Fernandes' long-term impact on the team. Parker, who won two Premier League titles with United, spoke to Daily Mail Sport via Kasinohai.
"Everyone's going: 'you can't let Bruno go,'" Parker said. "But can they win a league with Bruno? I don't think they can. So, when I keep hearing about him getting a new contract, I'm saying no, he's got a contract already, why do you want to give more because you need now to find another that's going to take you closer to winning that league... and it ain't going to be with Bruno! He's one of the players where it isn't going to happen that United win a title with him in the team."
