Monaco is negotiating to terminate Paul Pogba's contract by mutual agreement after the midfielder suffered a fresh muscle injury, according to The Athletic. The 33-year-old Frenchman has one year remaining on his deal with the French club, but has made only six appearances in 12 months under head coach Filipe Luís.
The Athletic reported that Pogba injured a muscle this week during pre-season training at St. George's Park in England. Monaco had hoped the 2018 World Cup winner with France would return to his previous physical level, but the club evaluated that he has not done so. Talks between the two sides regarding an early departure have been underway for several weeks.
Doping ban and return
Pogba joined Monaco on a free transfer in June last year after leaving Italian side Juventus. He made his debut for the team in November 2025, which marked his return to competitive football after 26 months off the pitch.
The midfielder tested positive for testosterone in September 2023 following a Serie A match against Udinese in the opening round of the Italian league. Juventus and Pogba terminated his contract at the time, which had one season remaining. The Court of Arbitration for Sport later reduced his four-year doping suspension to 18 months at the end of 2024, allowing him to sign an initial two-year contract with Monaco.
