Mallorcan pilot Augusto FernandezThe 2022 Moto2 World Championship leader has been confirmed as the second rider to join the new GasGas MotoGP team starting the 2023 season. The announcement of his signing completes the 2023 MotoGP grid.
Born in Madrid almost 25 years ago and raised in Mallorca from a young age, Fernández is the most prolific rider in the intermediate division so far in 2022, with four Grand Prix wins competing with Red Bull KTM Ajo. And he will be the only rookie, so he will jump to MotoGP, where he will certainly also hold the 2023 Rookie of the Year trophy.
Augusto joined the World Championship directly in Moto2 in 2018 as a substitute rider and learned quickly, taking 3 wins in 2019 and a total of 5 podiums. 2020 was another year of learning for him, but he could be in the top five of the championship in 2021, and he is already one of the clear contenders for the title in 2022.
“To be able to make the leap to MotoGP with GasGas is incredible and I would like to thank everyone around the competitive structure for supporting me.I am very happy and a dream come true.Things to do in Moto2 I still have a long way to go, so I want to fight for the title and go to MotoGP in the best possible way,” Fernandez said when his promotion to MotoGP for 2023 was announced.
GasGas Factory Racing Team Principal Hervé Poncharal explained: “It was very clear recently that he was ready to come to MotoGP. We have Pol and Augusto in our garage. They are both Spanish and will work positively and constructively This is what we were looking for MotoGP Augusto Welcome to Calm down and focus on the Moto2 Championship, we will be waiting for you in the garage for the first MotoGP test on Tuesday after the Valencia Grand Prix.”
GasGas Motorsport Director Pit Beirer said, “August completes a special ‘all-Spanish’ flavor in the first year of GasGas’ history in MotoGP.”On the track, he was very close. I’ve shown that I know how to make a difference in the championship of 2020. I’ve seen quite a few different winners and I hope he gets a chance with Pol in 2023 to show what MotoGP is all about. I think we’ve done everything possible to find out…the hardest step in a very competitive point, but we believe in him and he believes in us. and that is the best reason to move forward.
