From Gonzalez to Saint: The 39 drivers who won a Formula 1 race with Ferrari

2022 is the year in which the Tifosi finally win their beloved Ferrari again, even the Formula 1 title – mathematically always! Led by Charles Leclerc, who has won three Grands Prix this year, but also by Carlos Sainz Jr, who is constantly improving and even taking his first win at the British GP.

With this achievement, the Spaniard joins the list of drivers who have achieved at least one victory with Ferrari in Formula 1, bringing the number to 39. Let’s meet/remember them all.

1. Jose Froilan Gonzalez (1951): Ferrari’s first Formula One victory came at the 1951 British GP. The Argentine took his second and final F1 win again with Ferrari in 1954, this time at Silverstone.
2. Alberto Ascari (1951): The great Italian driver took his first and second wins for Ferrari in Formula 1 at the Nürburgring in 1951. In 1952 he won 6 out of 8 races and won his first Formula 1 championship, a success he repeated in 1953. He remains the only Italian to win the title with Ferrari.
   

   

3. Piero Taruffi (1952): The Italian clinched his only Formula 1 victory in the opening race of 1952 with Ferrari.
4. Mike Hawthorne (1953): Hawthorn won his first F1 race with Ferrari at the 1953 French GP. He won two more for the Italian team and the championship in 1958. He retired from racing shortly after but was killed in a car crash just 3 months later aged just 29.
5. Giuseppe “Nino” Farina (1953): He celebrated his first victory with Ferrari in 1953 at the Nürburgring, which was also his last in Formula 1.
6. Moritz Trinidad (1955): One of his two wins in his 14-year Formula One career was with Ferrari at Monaco in 1955.
7. Luigi Musso (1956): Of the four races he started in 1956, he only finished one, but he won this one! He was at the Argentine GP and that was his only F1 win. He died at the 1958 French GP.
8. Peter Collin (1956): His first victory with Ferrari came in 1956 at Spa (Belgium). He was also killed in the 1958 German Grand Prix.
9. Juan Manuel Fangio (1956): The great Argentine driver’s first win with the Scuderia was at Silverstone in 1956. In the same year he clinched another victory with Ferrari at the Nürburgring.
10. Tony Brooks (1959): The first of his two wins with the Italian team came in France 1959 and the second in Berlin.
11. Phil Hill (1960): Won three times with Ferrari in his F1 career. The first was in Monza in 1960. Hill was crowned champion with the Scuderia in 1961, just a point ahead of teammate Wolfgang von Trips, who died in the final race of the season.
12. Wolfgang von Trips (1961): Before he died in Monza in 1961 at the age of 33 – along with 15 spectators – the German had won twice with Ferrari, once in Holland and once in England.
    

    

13. John Surtice (1963): The first of his 4 overall victories with the Italian team came in 1963 at the Nürburgring race.
14. Lorenzo Bandini (1964): His only win in the 42 races he competed in Formula 1 was with Ferrari at the 1964 Austrian GP. He died with Ferrari in 1967, three days after his horrific accident at the Monaco GP.
15. Ludovico Scarfiotti (1966): His only victory in a Ferrari was in front of the Tifozi crowd at Monza in 1966.
16. Chimney Ix (1968): He scored six of his 8 overall Formula 1 victories with Ferrari. The first of these was in France in 1968.
17. Tone Regaccioni (1970): The first season he drove with Ferrari, he won at Monza. Three more victories followed with the Italian team. After an accident at the US GP in 1980, he was paralyzed from the waist down.
18. Mario Andretti (1971): The American (Italian-born) driver took his only win with Ferrari in his very first race with the Italian team, at the 1971 South African GP.
19. Niki Lauda (1974): 15 of his 25 wins and two of the great Austrian’s three F1 titles were with Ferrari. He won his first championship with the Scuderia at the 1974 Spanish GP.
    

    

20. Carlos Reutman (1977): The Argentine won with Ferrari in Brazil in 1977, in only his second race with the team. After Formula 1, Reutman also drove in the World Rally Championship.
21. Gilles Villeneuve (1978): All six of his F1 wins have been with Ferrari, with the first coming in 1978 in his native Canada. Villeneuve was killed in qualifying for the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix at the age of 32.
22. Jody Schechter (1979): The first of his three wins with Ferrari was at the 1979 Belgian GP. He was the seventh driver to win the Formula 1 championship for Ferrari.
23. Didier Pironi (1982): His first win with Ferrari was in San Marino in 1982, when he disobeyed team orders and overtook teammate Gilles Villeneuve. He also won in the Netherlands that same year and was leading in points until the accident at the German GP where he injured his legs and missed the last 4 races of the season, eventually finishing second in the championship behind Keke Rosberg.
24. Patrick Tambey (1982): Two wins in 21 races with Ferrari, the first at Hockenheim in 1982 and the second at San Marino in 1983.
25. Rene Arnou (1983): In his first year at Ferrari in 1983, he won three races, starting in Canada.
26. Michele Alboreto (1984): He celebrated his first victory with Ferrari in 1984 in Belgium. Two more followed in 1985 in Montreal and at the Nürburgring.
27. Gerhard Berger (1987): The Austrian raced with Ferrari for two seasons: 1987-89 and 1993-95, taking 5 of his 10 overall F1 victories with the Italian team. The first was in Japan in 1987, and the second in the next match. in Australia.
28. Nigel Mansel (1989): Of the Briton’s 31 F1 victories, 3 are with Ferrari. The first of these took place at the 1989 Brazilian GP.
29. Alain Prost (1990): The Frenchman switched from McLaren-Honda to Ferrari in 1990 for two years in which he recorded 5 wins. The first was in Brazil in 1990.
30. Jean Alesi (1995): In his 13-year career and 201 races in Formula 1, Alesi has only won once. That was in Montreal in 1995 with Ferrari.
31. Michael sSchumacher (1996): The German won 72 of his 91 victories and 5 of his 7 Formula 1 titles with Scuderia, starting with his victory in Brazil in 1996.
    

    

32. Eddie Irvine (1999): Despite having the role of second driver on the team, Irvine won 4 races and finished 2nd in the championship in 1999, behind Mika Häkkinen, when Schumacher broke his leg and was unable to compete in 6 Grands Prix.
33. Rubens Barrichello (2000): He celebrated the Brazilian’s first victory with Ferrari in 2000 in Hockenheim. Another 8 followed until 2005.
34. Philip Massa (2006): In his first season with Scuderia, he also got his first win in 2006 in Istanbul. All 11 of his Formula 1 victories are with Ferrari.
35. Kimi Raikkonen (2007): Won in Melbourne in 2007 in his very first race with Ferrari. 5 more victories followed this season, including the title.
36. Fernando Alonso (2010): The Spaniard began his 4-year partnership with Ferrari in 2010, kicking off the season with a win in Bahrain.
37. Sebastian Vettel (2015): Moved to Scuderia in 2015 after 4 championships with Red Bull. Achieved 14 wins in the red cars and competed in Malaysia in his very first year.
38. Charles Leclerc (2019): In his first year at Ferrari in 2019 and aged just 21 years and 10 months, the Monegasque claimed two wins: at Spa and at Monza.
39. Carlos Sainz Jr (2022): With his win at Silverstone, the Spaniard joins the list of drivers who can boast at least one win with Ferrari. Of course there are more to come…
