Alfa Romeo has kept Chow for 2023 as well
Chinese Guanyu Chow has been awarded a contract extension for the 2023 season by Alfa Romeo/Sauber for his outstanding performance in his Formula 1 debut earlier this year.
The 2023 F1 puzzle is beginning to be filled in as Alfa Romeo F1 has exercised its option to extend Guanyu Chow’s contract and today – as the sport travels to East Asia for the Singapore GP – made the official announcement that the Chinese driver will be in Hineville will remain for the next racing year.
Alfa Romeo F1 had decided since the end of August to keep Chow in the garage alongside Valtteri Bottas, according to information. We remind you that the Finnish ex-Mercedes F1 driver has a multi-year contract with the Swiss team.
Given Chow’s excellent performances in his first year at the motorsport crown that year and the rarity of errors despite his inexperience, it was expected that Alfa Romeo F1 would extend his contract. In fact, Chow has easily weathered the mental aftermath of his horrific accident at the start of the British GP.
At his first GP in March in Bahrain, he also scored his first points with a 10th place finish, while also posting a 6th place in Canada and another 10th place in Italy. Alfa Romeo / Sauber explained “Impressed by his dedication and attitude as he left no stone unturned to achieve the C42’s maximum potential.”
Frédéric Wasser, Team Manager, emphasised: “Since his first day with the team, from Abu Dhabi last year, he has impressed me with his approach to the job and that is always a very positive sign. We knew he was fast but the way he adapted to the team so quickly it was one of the best upsets of our year.
He’s a very nice guy, everyone on our team likes his personality and demeanor. He has the humility to ask questions and learn, both from the mechanics and from Valtteri (Botas), but also the intelligence to apply all that knowledge to improve his performance race after race.”
Following Alpha Tauri’s announcement a few days ago that Yuki Tsunoda and Alfa Romeo are now being renewed, this available seat in F1 2022 has also been closed. Four remain: Alpine is rumored to be filled by Pierre Gasly, Alpha Tauri (Gasly’s position) for Nick de Vries is the favourite, as is one at Haas and Williams for which there are many ‘suitors’.
