‘Nails’ Verstappen for Hamilton: ‘And Alonso would win the championship with other people’s cars’

Max Verstappen said Fernando Alonso was unlucky with the team selection he raced with in Formula 1, arguing the Spaniard would have had a lot more than his only two championships “if you put him in cars that others people have won championships”.

Fernando Alonso made a horrific statement about Max Verstappen in Singapore – which was essentially a statement about himself: “How much is he? 24-25? So he still has a long way to go but I wish him better luck than me because with those stats I was 26 once and those stats are the same now that I’m 40. “

Verstappen is just a breath away from winning his second straight title, which he can achieve over these three days in Suzuka, Japan. Alonso had won two consecutive world championships with Renault between 2005 and 2006. Also, Max’s next win will match the Spaniard’s 32 wins in total.

After the total collapse of his partnership with McLaren and Lewis Hamilton in 2007, Fernando Alonso never got the car he deserved for the next decade: not by Renault, not by Ferrari, not by McLaren again. And neither has Alpine for the last two years, following his return to Formula 1.

In all those years he was just a touch away from the 2007, 2010 and ’12 championships, which he lost by 8 points. A total of eight points for the three years. So he could very well have five championships – or more if he had been with Mercedes rather than Hamilton.

In fact, Toto Wolff had previously revealed that Alonso Mercedes had once offered his services for free, but then said it “that this is not a proper way of doing business”. Ayrton Senna had offered something similar to Sir Frank Williams in the distant past.

Alonso has made no secret of his appreciation for Verstappen’s talent and the Dutchman – where he talks about the Spaniard – said: “In Formula 1 you also need a bit of luck and you have to be lucky enough to make the right decisions to have a dominant car for a long time. I mean, of course, if you put Fernando in the cars that other people have won championships, he would have the same thing.

“But that’s not how F1 works. At the end of the day he won two championships so I think he did really well. And he’s also a nice guy and a great personality for F1.” Verstappen closed.
