This is Leclerc’s penalty that gave Verstappen the title
Charles Leclerc missed the final chicane, picking his way over the curbs resulting in a five-second penalty, losing second place and handing the title to Max Verstappen.
The finale of the Japanese GP was dramatic, where we finally had a champion. Max Verstappen arrived in the pits not knowing what had happened.
While making statements, he was told that Charles Leclerc had received a penalty and that it made him the new world champion. What has Monegasque done?
As you can see both in the photo uploaded by Formula 1 on their official account and in the video just below Leclerc, under pressure from Perez, Leclerc missed the final chicane and went straight.
The stewards reviewed the incident and decided to give the Ferrari driver a five-second penalty. This resulted in him finishing 3rd, a development that earned Verstappen the world title.
