Mercedes: “Doable to find the speed we lack for 2023”
While he didn’t specify exactly how much lap time the Mercedes W13 has left on Red Bull and Ferrari, the champion’s technical director Mike Elliott is hopeful the Brackley team can fight at the top again in Formula 1 next year.
Mike Elliott has confirmed that Mercedes is at an advanced stage of planning the W14 car for 2023 Formula 1, that the team understands the root causes of this year’s issues that have left them on the sidelines and the goal is to add wins win, as Lewis refers to Hamilton and George Russell at next season’s GP.
Towards the middle of this season, Mercedes managed to solve the unstable W13’s very severe bouncing problems, which had been an unsolvable mystery to the champion for months. However, it was able to show its speed on some occasions, as with Russell’s pole position at the slow-moving Hungary Ring, but at very fast circuits – like Spa and Monza – it was uncompetitive.
Elliott claims Mercedes learned a lot in 2013 that will help them become F1 stars again in 2023: “It is clear that we are at an advanced stage in the development of next year’s car”said the Brit. “It’s hard to predict for how long [στο γύρο] we must find.
»If we speak of strengths and weaknesses [μας], maybe we could talk about each track individually. But if we look back at how we developed the car, we can identify a point in time where we did something that I think was wrong. What you’re seeing in terms of on-track performance, the way our performance fluctuates is a consequence [του λάθους] his.
“This is a mistake that we have known about for a long time. And it’s something we fix. Therefore, our performance gradually improved. What we were trying to do was figure it all out, and I think we’re doing it now. We know what we need to fix. But it’s also something we’ll need some time to fully resolve. We’ll do that in the winter.”
Included as part of correcting this “bug” is the package of aerodynamic upgrades taking Mercedes to the US GP in Texas over the next three days. This is the final development of the W13 for this year, which will help better understand the issue for the design of the new W14.
Eliot concluded: “As for how much speed we need to find, of course I won’t give you a number because that would give too much away, but I think it’s within the realm of what can be found. So I think we have to work hard, work hard in the winter and hopefully we can get back to where we were and fighting at the top.”added Elliott.
Wolff: “Advantage red bull and 2023″
Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff partially agreed with Elliott, saying that while Mercedes could close the gap on Red Bull next year, the Austrian team will start 2023 as favorites due to their absolute dominance of the sport since last July – at seven Consecutive victories from the French GP to the Japanese GP where Max Verstappen secured that year’s championship.
“Obviously we lost a lot of development time trying to figure out what’s going on with the car crashing and all that,” said Wolff. “So it is clear that the red bull in a very advantageous position not only this year but also for the beginning of next year.
“But if we can further understand and develop the car, I think we can catch up with them quickly. We’re just learning how to do this. Our simulations don’t always give us the right results about what the car is doing on the track, but that makes it interesting.”added the Austrian.
RBR will soon mathematically secure this year’s Formula 1 constructors’ title, their first since 2013, ending Mercedes’ eight-year reign since 2014, when Formula 1’s hybrid era began.
Given the loss of the scepters that year and the risk of Mercedes, like Hamilton, being without a win in the first year of his career in F1, Wolff concluded: “We’ve talked about this before, all streaks end eventually, there’s no team in any sport that wins every championship while it’s there. And that’s what happened.
“It happened because we got the natural error. Suddenly there is nothing mystical about it. We have great people, equipment, infrastructure and financial resources. What got us wrong was how the car worked, but that gives us the confidence to sort it out.
Speaking of defeat, we just have to accept that we didn’t do well enough, the guys at Milton Keynes and Maranello did. THE Ferrari In my opinion it was the fastest car up until the summer. But they failed to convert that into points. We’re third, it’s not something miserable, it’s decent because we could have found further back. But for now we just have to clear it up.
“We are looking forward to getting into the fight for the top, for victories and for the championship. We would be stupid to think we deserved to win the league every year.”
