CUPRA will race in Formula E in partnership with ABT
The new ABT CUPRA Formula E team will compete in the Formula E championship from 2023 with drivers Robin Friens and Nico Miller.
CUPRA is one of the few companies with a large activity in electric motorsport. The Spanish brand developed the e-Racer, the world’s first 100% electric touring car, and has had great success in institutions such as the FIA ETCR and Extreme E.
The next step for CUPRA in its quest to become a fully electrified brand by 2030 is Formula E, the world’s premier electric racing championship, in which the company will compete alongside ABT in 2023. ABB FIA Formula E is the first all-electric FIA World Championship in the world and the only one to be certified net zero since its inception.
The team’s drivers will be Dutchman Robin Friens and Swiss Nico Miller, while engine technology will be provided by Mahindra Racing. CUPRA already concompetes with ABT in Extreme E, while ABT celebrates great success in Formula E with its own team.
For its part, CUPRA has extensive experience from the FIA ETCR World Cup – the world’s first electric touring car championship – where the team won the double drivers’ and constructors’ championship in both 2021 and 2022. In 2022, CUPRA EKS drivers occupied all three top 3 positions in the final season standings, with the CUPRA e-Racer being by far the fastest and most reliable car in the competition for the second year in a row. At the same time, the Spanish company takes part in Extreme E, the global electric SUV off-road competition.
