Binotto signs 2023 from Ferrari, Audi on the horizon
According to information from Italy, Scuderia Ferrari will compensate Mattia Binotto for the whole of 2023 with an agreement not to work for another team before the end of the year. Cesare Fiorio is fueling rumors that the Italian will join Audi from 2024.
The tactic used by Formula 1 teams to prevent their top managers from moving to another team immediately after exit is neither new nor strange anymore.
This is the so-called “fallow year” and is done to prevent the transfer of technical information from the old to the new group of such a tribe.
According to Italian publications, something like this also happens in the case of Ferrari and his Matia Binotto. The Italian stepped down as race director at the end of November, officially leaving the post on the last day of 2023 – a week before the arrival of his successor Frederik Vasser.
However, according to website Formu1a.uno, Binotto will not be able to work for another team this year after reaching an agreement with Ferrari on a “year off” until the end of 2023 when the deal between the two sides, which broke last November, expires .
This means that Binotto will neither work nor have any contact with Ferrari for the whole of 2023, but will also not be allowed to work for any other team until the end of the year. The deal includes the Italian’s financial compensation from Scuderia for the entire period.
At the same time, this also means that we have to wait at least another year to find out about the next step in Mattia Binotto’s career. Rumors are growing that he will be at Hineville, the Sauber factory that will be renamed Audi in 2026.
Last December, major Italian media reported that the Italian had held talks with Audi management. At the same time, following the departure of Fred Wasser from the position of Sauber Race Director (Alfa Romeo F1, until the end of 2023) to take Binotto’s place at Ferrari, Sauber announced the acquisition of Andreas Seidl from McLaren.
However, Siddle doesn’t have an engineering but more of an administrative background, and he hasn’t taken on the position of race director, but rather another position: that of managing director of the team. Which means the position of race director at Hineville remains vacant – and many believe it will be filled by Binotto in 2024 when the Italian is sacked by Ferrari.
Rumors, meanwhile, were fueled by Ferrari’s former race director in the 1990s, Cesare Fiorio, that Binotto’s particular technical know-how and skill would be very attractive to Audi. “If I were in a position where I had to get into F1 soon, I wouldn’t give it a second thought: I would try to sign Binotto, I wouldn’t let him slip through my hands.” said Fiori.
For the same reason, Binotto’s absence will be a blow to Scuderia, Fiorio continued: “I would keep him at Maranello. Ferrari’s car was on par with Red Bull in 2022, they were the two best cars of the season. They responded well to the big rule changes. They lacked reliability and that cost them the championship, but. ” I still believe that Matias is a great technician”, Fiorio told Italy’s Corriere dello Sport.
Despite this, Fiorio believes that Frédéric Wasser has what it takes to make Ferrari champions again: “Vasser is no skyscraper and he will find a way to surpass it by building on Binotto’s excellent foundation. He should be able to give the team the opportunity to develop the car throughout the year. And he should get the right strategic decisions,” completed.
But technically, Wasser doesn’t have the expertise of Binotto, so Scuderia are called upon to fill the void left by their late race manager. According to Italian reports, the Scuderia are considering recalling the Hineville team’s technical director and former employee Simone Resta from Sauber.
Another rumor has it that it is targeting one of its most talented aerodynamicists, Enrico Cardile, who is currently head of the chassis department, for the role of technical director. The position of technical director was previously held by Scuderia’s race operations manager, Loren Mekis.
Finally, word has it that Ferrari is also reviewing its options for the position of strategy director at the races, a position held by Spaniard Inaki Rueda.

A king was born on Boxing Day: Amorim’s United fielded four defenders for the first time
There was only one Premier League game, held on Friday December 26th, the traditional Boxing Day, but it was a very good match for Manchester United fans who have experienced so much disappointment of late. A 1-0 win against Newcastle was a relief for the Old Trafford side.
But it was more than that. Ruben Amorim, unwilling to change his philosophy despite his poor results, played with four players in defense for the first time at United.
United have changed in other ways as well. They won with a possession rate of 33.4%, the lowest of any Red Devils team this season. This was also the lowest since January 2023, when they scored 29.4 per cent in the win over Manchester City. And United had nine shots on goal compared to 16 for the Magpies.
Patrick Dorg’s first goal as a Manchester United player and his second “clean sheet” of the season opened the door to an unpretty but essential victory for Amorim’s side. Amorim admitted it was one of his “most satisfying” wins since taking charge of United. “We are suffering together. If we always have this spirit, we will win many games,” added the Portuguese coach. And all this happened without United football’s most influential player, Bruno Fernandes, missing out due to injury. Amorim replaced the Portuguese midfielder with Uruguayan Manuel Ugarte.
