The curtain fell on Bahrain, Perez fastest with Red Bull RB19

Champion Red Bull Racing capped three dominant days of testing in Bahrain with first-time Sergio Perez 0.36s clear of second-placed Lewis Hamilton in the Mercedes W14 and Ferrari seven tenths back.

Under floodlights at the Shakir Circuit in Bahrain, a unique three-day development test for the Formula One teams’ new cars came to an end, six days before the first tests of the inaugural Formula One GP of 2023 at the same Middle East circuit.

During the sunny day in the Bahrain desert, the teams first focused on sets of laps for the middle tire racing simulation (C3). In these, Sergio Perez drove the fastest lap in the new Red Bull RB19, 1:31.714, about 0.15” ahead of Hamilton in the Mercedes W14.

In the afternoon, as the sun went down, the teams took to the track for the qualifying test simulation on the two softer Pirelli tires (C4 and C5). The C5 is the softest of them all, and that was Hamilton’s second time and Valtteri Bottas third in the Alfa Romeo C43, 0.35 inches and 0.5 inches behind Perez, who scored the first time (1:30.305) with the theoretical slower C4 achieved rubber.

Behind Mercedes – which recovered from its problematic second day yesterday (24/03) – and Alfa Romeo, which showed promise, Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz completed the top five with the Ferrari SF-23, also under the C4 tyre the fastest of their laps.

The Monegasque led the Cavallino in the morning and the Spaniard in the afternoon, and in the end they were separated by just 12 thousandths of a second – as the Scuderia didn’t show their full potential over the three days. However, this undoubtedly applies to all top teams, including RBR.

Significantly, while Red Bull didn’t show the full dynamics of the RB19, the Mexican’s current time was not only faster than last year’s development tests at the same track, but even better than the pole position achieved by Leclerc on the same track like last year’s Bahrain GP (though with slightly softer rubber). It should be noted that the harder C3-C2-C1 tires will be available again for the other three days (March 3-5) of this race.

Sixth place Yuki Tsunoda in the Alpha Tauri AT04 was the last rider to catch Perez by less than a second. The Japanese was closely followed by Kevin Magnussen (Haas VF-23), George Russell (Mercedes W14) and Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin AMR23) while the top ten was closed, 0.6 inches back, by Felipe Drugovic, who finished the morning green car drove before giving up way to Alonso.

Meanwhile, things continued to go badly for McLaren. They were the only team not to manage to set laps in the triple digits today: braking problems left Oscar Piastri with 44 laps in the morning, while aerodynamic problems left Lando Norris with several periods in the pits. The Brit did even less, 37 laps.

As for Alpine, it remained unremarkable and arguably showed nothing of the A523’s true potential as Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon fell to 12th and 14th respectively, with Alex Albon (Williams FW45) between them.

The three-day development trial in Bahrain ended with an unexpected static launch simulation. The actual first start of the year is eight days from now at the same venue for the Bahrain GP, which opens the curtain on the 2023 Formula One season on March 5.

New F1 team boss: “I am very happy that we chose Ferrari engines”

Cadillac team boss Grim Loudon has said the team will use a fully legal engine for the 2026 season, following controversy over Mercedes’ engine cheating allegations.

During the winter months, Mercedes, and possibly Red Bull, reportedly found a way to increase the engine compression ratio above the new 16:1 limit while the cars were on track. Moreover, during measurements made in boxes at normal temperatures, turning the compression to 16:1 provided an increase in power. At the Melbourne round it was estimated that this time could go up to 0.3 seconds per lap, or up to 17.4 seconds over the 58-lap circuit.

The new player in the championship, Cadillac, will be a customer of Ferrari and the team has already run the engine at Silverstone.

“I am very pleased and confident that we have a completely legal engine,” Loudon said.

“In these engines, combustion is not allowed to occur at a compression ratio of more than 16 to 1.
Without going into detail, we know that Ferrari complies fully with the rules and this gives us great confidence.

We work and support our engine partner at the maximum level in terms of performance. We are extremely pleased with the cooperation.

I can’t speak for other people’s engines or how others interpret the rules. But for me everything is extremely clear; everything is black and white.”

I have worked with Ferrari many times before; they are great partners. This is a legendary name in Formula 1. “All the people on this team are true racers, and we’re excited to welcome them to the Cadillac team.”

Ex-McLaren engineer to lead Hamilton’s Ferrari team

At the beginning of last week, Ferrari officially announced that Lewis Hamilton’s chief engineer Riccardo Adami was leaving his post to become chief tester of previous cars and head of the team’s youth academy.

Hamilton and Adami worked together in the Briton’s first season with Ferrari in 2025. However, their collaboration has repeatedly come under scrutiny due to intense radio exchanges during races. On the eve of the new season, the team decided to separate the sides.

Given the quick appointment of a replacement following the termination of Adami’s contract, it became clear that this was not part of the Scuderia’s original plans. Kimi Raikkonen’s former engineer, Carlo Santi, has temporarily taken over as Lewis Hamilton’s race engineer from Riccardo Adami.

At the same time, a number of exclusive media are reporting that Ferrari has reached an agreement with former McLaren engineer Cedric Michel-Grosjean at the beginning of the 2026 season. He was previously the Woking team’s chief track performance engineer, working closely with Oscar Piastri until his sacking last December.

Formula 1 2026 Pre-Season Testing Program in Spain

Formula 1’s first pre-season tests before the 2026 season start on Monday, January 26, at the Barcelona-Catalunya circuit.

Due to the introduction of new regulations regarding powertrains and active aerodynamics, this year’s testing program starts earlier than usual ahead of the season’s opening race in Melbourne.

Instead of one three-day test, there will be three separate testing sessions before the Australian Grand Prix. The first of these will be a five-day closed test in Barcelona.

Testing will take place from January 26 to 30, but each team will only be allowed to practice on three of the five days.

While McLaren and Ferrari confirmed that they will not be on the track on the first day of testing, Williams will miss the Barcelona session completely after its decision to withdraw.

Daily races will take place between 10:00 and 18:00 Kyiv time. If weather conditions are suitable, work on the runway may be extended for another hour.
