The 6 sprint races 2023
The 2023 Formula 1 Championship consists of 6 three-day races with an additional sprint race on Saturday. See the Grand Prix and the dates.
Sprint races were first held in 2021 and are short races totaling 100 km with no mandatory pit stops, held on Saturday afternoons during certain three-day Formula 1 races. These races offer additional points to the top 8 drivers (8 points from the winners, 7 second, 6 3rd etc.) and determine the starting order of Sunday’s main GP.
The starting order of the sprint will be determined by the qualifying tests, which will be moved to Friday afternoon. However, we must note that in the statistical tables, the holder of pole position for each race is the one who won Friday’s qualifying tests, not Saturday’s sprint race.
6 sprint races in as many GPs are planned for 2023:
- Azerbaijan GP (Baku): April 29
- Austrian GP (Spielberg): 1 July
- Belgian GP (Spa): 29 July
- Qatar GP (Losail): October 7th
- US GP: Austin (October 21
- Brazilian GP (Interlago): 4 November
According to Formula 1 boss Stefano Dimenicali, the reception of the sprint races by fans of the sport was “overly positive” and brings in addition “Added value for the sport’s key stakeholders, including teams, broadcasters, sponsors and organizers”.
