Leclerc: “With five wins we can become champions in 2022”
Charles Leclerc has been open about his ambitions to become Ferrari’s first world champion this year after Kimi Raikkonen in 2007, but at the same time remains cautious before seeing the upgrades Mercedes will bring to Bahrain.
The performance and reliability of the new Ferrari F1-75 during the first three days of winter testing this year in Barcelona reinforced the views of F1 pundits – including Mercedes’ Toto Wolff and RBR’s Helmut Marco – that Scuderia has the potential to step in this year Battle for the Formula 1 Championships.
Until now, the people of Maranello have avoided talking directly about the championship, but that has now changed with Charles Leclerc’s comments on a French TV channel. Monegasque spoke about his ambition to claim five victories in 2022 which he said could earn him the Drivers’ title.
Leclerc, who has two GP wins to his name so far, underlined his goals for 2022: “Five wins would be great. “If we perform consistently, five wins can be enough to win the world championship.”
And he justified his ambitions by saying: “The last two years have been difficult. The pressure on Ferrari it’s always great. But we reacted as a team and prepared well for the new set of rules this year. “The test days in Bahrain are very important to prepare for the first race of the year.”
In the meantime, the Monegasque is of course keeping a low profile – especially since nobody knows how to balance the top with this year’s completely revised cars: “We remain vigilant because we do not yet know where we are. But we have strong motivations and want to fight at the top.
Also in 2019 we thought we had good speed after the first tests, but as the Mercedes the upgrades (from his car of the time) we found we were a lot behind than we thought., concluded Leclerc. We remind you that this week Mercedes travels to Bahrain with a wide package of upgrades of the new W13, so big that many are even talking about a brand new B version of its car.

A king was born on Boxing Day: Amorim’s United fielded four defenders for the first time
There was only one Premier League game, held on Friday December 26th, the traditional Boxing Day, but it was a very good match for Manchester United fans who have experienced so much disappointment of late. A 1-0 win against Newcastle was a relief for the Old Trafford side.
But it was more than that. Ruben Amorim, unwilling to change his philosophy despite his poor results, played with four players in defense for the first time at United.
United have changed in other ways as well. They won with a possession rate of 33.4%, the lowest of any Red Devils team this season. This was also the lowest since January 2023, when they scored 29.4 per cent in the win over Manchester City. And United had nine shots on goal compared to 16 for the Magpies.
Patrick Dorg’s first goal as a Manchester United player and his second “clean sheet” of the season opened the door to an unpretty but essential victory for Amorim’s side. Amorim admitted it was one of his “most satisfying” wins since taking charge of United. “We are suffering together. If we always have this spirit, we will win many games,” added the Portuguese coach. And all this happened without United football’s most influential player, Bruno Fernandes, missing out due to injury. Amorim replaced the Portuguese midfielder with Uruguayan Manuel Ugarte.
